about

Something of a detour...

In late 2015 I conceived an album of works for a VST instrument emulating a piano, recording three pieces before putting the project aside to work on other things. I subsequently wished I'd had access to a more natural sounding piano instrument, and this was before I got into recording MIDI data so it wasn't possible to substitute the instrument without starting again from scratch. It remained a demo of three ideas with a vague concept to perhaps one day recreate them and add further pieces.

Several years on, I thought I'd might as well present them as they are, a semi-improvisational semi-minimalistic clutch of sketches, unadorned, slight timing errors here and there intact, musically honest.

'Ornaments' is a double improvisation without rhythmic meter.

'Sakura' (cherry blossom) was the first of the three pieces to be recorded, part composed part improvised.

'Idolatry' is a piano version of the third section of a piece of the same name which I composed and recorded in the mid-90s. I was unsatisfied with its original form and it will likely remain buried, but this version which takes on a minimalistic pattern-based approach in its latter half is much more successful.
