about

The first phase of my recorded body of work, between 1990 and 1997 was typically more conventionally structured. By contrast, the second phase, which began in 1998, was a plunge into vivid shadowy underworlds of experimentation which lasted a decade or so before I surfaced. At this vague point, around 2009, I crossfaded into a third phase where I began to draw upon the experience I had gleaned from both my previous phases and my music from this point onwards began to combine aspects and sensibilities from my entire body of work from 1990 onwards. This hybrid third phase continues to the present.

Upon recently reappraising my work from the second phase, I naturally had my distinct favourites. Also, as the 1990s drew to a clos,e I recorded some works of long duration comprising several sections segueing into one another; I found myself wanting to hear some of them as discreet pieces with beginnings and ends in their own right and wanted to present them as such. I also rediscovered a number of previously unused pieces which had merit. The idea of presenting all these pieces together as a double-length compilation became more and more appealing and so, after some careful remixing and editing, this 150-minute album is the result.

Tracks 1-9 were recorded on 4-track cassette and so any slight compromise in sound quality is down to the limitations of the recording medium; the remaining tracks were recorded digitally. As I'm old enough to still think of albums in terms of physical media, I conceived the two sets to fit on a CD each.

Track 1 is the initial version of The Duality Shroud from January 1998; a developed version with additional soundscaping and the vocals of Victoria Bourne subsequently appeared on our collaborative album of the same title released in 2021.
Tracks 2 and 8 are extracts from Ascension, the material of which was recorded October-November 1998. Quiet is my original 2006 mix whereas Rapture was remixed in March 2023.
Tracks 3, 5 and 7 are extracts from Substance, recorded in March 1999, remixed in March 2023.
Track 4 is a previously-unused piece recorded in 2000 and intended for a home video, mixed in March 2023.
Track 6 is from Stream of Consciousness, recorded February 1998 and mixed in November 2013. The effected half-speed acoustic guitar was played by my late friend Gareth West (1976-2009) originally on a piece recorded in the summer of 1997.
Track 9 is a previously-unused piece for guitar and effects recorded in 2002, mixed in May 2022.
Track 10 is the first piece from Sloth, remixed in March 2023.
Tracks 11 and 15 are from Scattering, recorded on the evening of 9th July 2007. For this album I added an archive recording of Victoria Bourne playing flute to track 10.
Tracks 12, 13 and 17 are from Quicksilver.
Track 14 was made in Australia in 2006 and remixed in 2014, later appearing on Eruptions.
Track 16 is a previously-unused piece recorded in 2008, mixed in February 2021.
Track 18 is the final movement of Birdbrainsuite, produced between 2007 and 2009 and featuring flute from Victoria Bourne and radio interference from Nigel Harris, my 2/3 cohort.

All music, compilation and artwork (with help from MidJourney on the latter) by Jim Tetlow, March 2023.
