about

After a couple of years or so of making music on the Commodore Amiga, 1998 was the year I decided to pretty much give up programmed/sequenced music and go freeform. It was a year of experimentation which proved fruitful, producing several albums' worth of material. The Fair Gardener was inspired by (and is dedicated to) the extraordinary work of German-born surrealist artist Max Ernst (1891-1976). "Comprovised" and recorded over an intensive three day period in autumn 1998, each piece is a direct musical response capturing my subjective impressions of the painting after which it was titled. I was trying out all sorts of combinations of instruments and non-instruments and covering a wide gamut of styles and moods.

Originally intended for a cassette release, The Fair Gardener existed only as a set of rough analogue mixdowns for nearly a decade before I transferred the 4-track masters to digital files in late 2006, completing the job via laptop a year later while living for a time in New South Wales, Australia. While some pieces were merely mixed and left as they were, the new scope for unlimited tracks afforded me the opportunity to develop some of the others to the best of my ability and resources.
